Where is Ischia?
Ischia is the widest of the Parthenopean islands lying in the Gulf of Naples, opposite to the main city of Naples and the splendid Amalfi Coast. The distance between Ischia and Naples is the same between Ischia and Capri: around 16 miles, so that they form a perfect equilateral triangle. The Ischia island has a surface of 46,33 sq km and a population of approximately 60.000 inhabitants. Its territory is divided into 6 Municipalities: Ischia (also known as Ischia Porto), Casamicciola Terme (its second commercial and tourist port), Lacco Ameno (small tourist harbour), Forio (its third commercial and tourist port), Serrara Fontana (which belongs St. Angelo with its small marina too) and Barano d'Ischia.

Where is St. Angelo?
This ancient fishermen village is located on the southern part of Ischia and characterised by the impressive peninsula La Torre, today a wildlife reserve, connected to the main island by a natural sand isthmus. St. Angelo has a very particular personality, unlike the rest of the island, which is much more lively but somehow also chaotic: here the rhythm of life is more relaxed, thanks also to the fact that the whole village is a pedestrian zone. It could not be otherwise, because of the morphology of the territory, where incredible stairway alleys and lanes intersect. Though it represents today a highly impressive tourist destination, St. Angelo still keeps its ancient characteristics (also from the landscape and architectonic point of view), when it was a simple fishermen village, whose small harbour, nowadays patronized by tourist boats, in the past was the safe port of fishing boats.

Where is located the Park Hotel & Terme Romantica?
At the end of a long straight stretch of the provincial road connecting Succhivo to St. Angelo, around 700 m before the village and opposite to the bus end station of Cava Grado (having the same name of the nice bay and beach). Moreover, the hotel lies not directly on the street, as it is located on a hill at 70 m above sea level, thus overlooking the whole Gulf from the peninsula La Torre (wildlife reserve) to the bay of Cava Grado and the impressive bay of Sorgeto, well-known for its hot thermal water gushing out from the rocks and the sand so that it forms impressive natural hot pools where one can plunge and enjoy thermal benefits all year round.

Which means of transport can I catch to reach the Park Hotel & Terme Romantica?
The SEPSA public bus service is steadily active on the Ischia island. It covers the whole territory, except the inner areas, that can be reached only through country lanes. The island's perimeter is connected by the National Road 270, where public buses make many trips, some of them also in the night. From both directions you can reach our hotel: from North-East-South (arriving at the harbour of Ischia Porto) and from North-West-South (arriving either at the port of Casamicciola Terme or Forio). Bus tickets can be bought at the tobacco shops, newsstands and shops where this service is available or at the SEPSA ticket offices near the main bus stops.
On the whole island's territory are available both public "
microtaxis" and
taxis in the numerous parking areas near the ports and the places of interest. Bookings by phone too.

Is it possible to rent a car, a scooter or a boat on Ischia?
There are many Car & Scooter Rentals on Ischia able to deliver a vehicle in a few minutes or to plan the delivery directly at the arrival port. The circulation on the island is quite easy, thanks to the numerous street marks; in any case we are referring to the National Road 270 whereas the smaller streets are surely more difficult, as their roadway is often just sufficient to one way. On the contrary, they are to be avoided for those who do not know well our island, whereas they are really interesting for naturalist guided walks.
Boat hiring is available in various spots of Ischia, where sailors' cooperatives operate and also offer the chance of having a skipper on board.
Moreover, from April to October you can also catch a taxi boat at the Maronti beach, that connects the whole shoreline (2 km) as well as the marina of Sant'Angelo, so that you can enjoy comfortable and speed transfers along the coast. On the contrary, to reach intimate bays it is possible to hire a boat or to agree the transfer there and back with the pick-up time by the taxi boat.
Which are the major places of interest in the Town of Ischia?
Thanks to its 46 sq km of surface, our island offers not only very different landscapes rich in unbeatable charm, but also a wide range of places of interest, equally distributed on its 6 municipalities. Our virtual tour begins from the major harbour of the island: Ischia Porto, where concentrate a lot of impressive spots. This commune is composed by two large towns: Porto and Ponte.
The first one is characterised by a wide pedestrian zone boasting its special inclination for social life, thanks to the great number of shops, restaurants and cafès, food & wine tasting rooms and clubs (where you can savour the typical local specialities together with the excellent Ischia wine); the long sand beaches; the cliffs; the well-known, impressive pine-woods, today called “Public Parks”, where many art events take place (concerts, plays, competitions); the beautiful squares, today fully renovated in the name of their original architecture; the numerous churches (from the imposing cathedrals to the small churches); the famous Rive Droite, the right side of the harbour where restaurants, inns, piano-bars and tasting rooms boast their own special appeal one after another in enchanting surroundings, with the smell of the sea. At the end of this charming path is located the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn (Zoological Station) , an international reference point for the research after marine wildlife. While going on with our virtual tour we encounter the Harbour itself, a wide volcanic lake till mid-1800's, when it was transformed into a port by Ferdinando II di Borbone (of the Bourbon Dinasty), who had immediately guessed the incredible tourist potential of the Ischia island and wanted to equip it with the most important system of communication with the mainland; the Acquedotto Romano (Roman Aqueduct), today well-known with the name of Pilastri, built in 1673 on behalf of Monsignor Girolamo Rocca.
Ischia Ponte is the older "sister" of Ischia Porto, as it represents the Ancient Ischia with its impressive Historical Centre, its charming lanes directly leading to the sea or the century-old built-up areas on the street, the numerous shops and the charming craftman's studioes – where the ancient local art of working clay, pottery and terracotta expresses its vital energy. The food & wine tasting rooms, the appealing book shops (rich also in ancient and modern publications about Ischia), its monuments of great historical significance, among them several churches and cathedrals, owing the most different architectural styles, but in any case with an unmistakeable sense of deep religiousness, the Piazzale Aragonese (Aragona Square) linked to the Castello Aragonese (Aragona Castle), once called Insula Minor, represent some of the uncountable places of great interest lying in these surroundings. Also the Torre di Guevara (Guevara's Tower) standing out on the hill of Cartaromana, for many years Michelangelo's residence, still tells the romantic legend about his secret love for Vittoria Colonna (one of the poetesses who ennobled of art the Castello during the Renaissance). Ischia Ponte's history is highly linked to the Castello Aragonese, where periods of great splendour alternated to sad and painful ones over the past centuries.
The first building on its territory was built on behalf of Gerone di Siracusa in 474 B. C., whereas around mid 1400s the long wood bridge was transformed into the present cement bridge, where the only opening allows the passage of small boats from one side to the other of the bay. And the bigger boats? They simply have to circumnavigate the Castello! Its history rich in culture and art plays a significant role also in modern times: in fact, the Castello houses the Arms Museum as well as several Art Exhibitions and represents itself a real Museum under the open sky with the Maschio (Keep) standing out on the north-west top and determining the highest point of the Castello: 113 m above sea level. The ancient Clarisse Monastery, the Immacolata's Church, the Assunta's Cathedral, the St. Peter's Crypt, the Jail (where many heroes of the Risorgimento were imprisoned), the Cemetery and the winding lanes frequently marked with ramparts and watch towers.
A further
added value is surely the
extraordinary and never ending view from the several terraces, each one boasting a different perspective and offering a unique landscape.

Second port of the Ischia island with frequent trips to/from Naples and Pozzuoli, this municipality belongs to the ones enabled with the title of “Terme” after its name, thanks to its extraordinary tradition of thermal cures, already appreciated over the Roman Era. Numerous thermal springs, which are highly exploited and brought out both by the ancient Spas (among them there is also the famous Pio Monte della Misericordia) and modern hotels, along with long beaches near the town centre attract many visitors, and the ancient hill villages offer a splendid view.
Another particular characteristic of Casamicciola Terme is the evocative, big iron anchor, recovered some decades ago in the water in front of the Casamicciola Terme port and today rightfully showed off in the town area leading to the port where it forms an impressive "green square" thanks to the numerous flowerbeds surrounding it.
The Mount Rotaro, once Mount Arso, threw out for the last time in 1301, before falling asleep and being covered by a magnificent chestnut wood, functioning as a real lung for the whole municipality. A place of extraordinary beauty.
Which are the major places of interest in the Town of Lacco Ameno?
Though having a small surface, this town plays a significant role in the tourist world of the Ischia island, thanks to its natural beauty and its high-class hotels. Really not by chance, the well-known entrepreneur Angelo Rizzoli fell in love with it in the '50s of the last century, when he invested a lot of money to increase its fame and appeal. So, the glamorous Albergo della Regina Isabella and the Hospital Anna Rizzoli were born. Thanks to the unceasing efforts of Angelo Rizzoli, Lacco Ameno as well as the whole Ischia island turned into a highly requested destination for international tourists, including an incredible quantity of personalities in the cultural and showbiz life. It was the time of the Italian economic boom: in that context Ischia succeeded in exploiting at best its excellent “natural gifts”, skilfully managed by a class of businessmen, who set still today an example for present entrepreneurs.
The
Fungo (Mushroom), the symbol of Lacco Ameno, is a big tuff rock rising opposite to the impressive
seafront, the
Archaeological Excavations of Santa Restituta, the
Museum of Villa Arbusto, the
Heliport overlooking the sea, the magic
Bay of San Montano,
Mount Vico, the
hill areas, rich in
unforgettable landscapes: all of them really well worth seeing!

Which are the major places of interest in the Town of Forio?
Among the largest municipalities of Ischia, Forio represents a town where history, culture and art have been living close each other, as in the first half of the 1900's it became the residence of choice for a wide circle of poets, writers, painters, sculptors and musicians.
In fact, the Gardens & Museum La Mortella, in the charming district of Zaro, play an international role in the sphere of classic music (their founder, Sir William Walton, was a great musician and a man of great culture) as well as of botany, a passion literally cultivated also by his wife, Lady Susana Walton, who is still going on with the same enthusiasm that had been characterising her unforgotten husband.
So, it is possible to admire still today the Gardens where valuable plants, trees and flowers coming from five continents live harmoniously and give birth to a unique habitat for the Museum, the Tea Room and the two Rooms for concerts of classic music, taking place from April to June as well as from September to the end of October.
La Colombaia, Luchino Visconti's (the great film director) Villa, is today an appreciated Study Centre for the Cinematographic Art, thus being frequently attended by great personalities in the showbiz for cultural events. Located in the extraordinary district of Zaro in a happy position near the terrace-lookout vertically on the sea, it overlooks the whole beach of San Francesco.
The large town centre of Forio, well-protected and increased in value thanks to a wide pedestrian zone, is really rich in typical rooms that tell its history with surprising topicality. The Torrione (High Tower), an impressive control tower built in 1543 in defence of the territory from the Turkish invasions, can be visited by means of its Museum where art exhibitions take place periodically.
It is on the foreland along the promenade of the Chiaia and the port of Forio (the third one of the Ischia island) that arises Punta Soccorso, where is located the Church with the same name, once an Augustinian convent built in 1350. A timeless, evocative place, the Chiesa del Soccorso (Rescue Church) took its name from the ex-voto offerings given by the sailors to propitiate good fortune in the open sea. The long sand beach with some rocks of the great Bay of Citara offers, along almost 2 km of coast, some sand stretches alternated to wild cliffs facing the open sea and, in the very distance, Sardinia. In this surroundings are situated the Poseidon Thermal Gardens, which are an exclusive heritage of Ischia, together with the other thermal gardens of the Ischia island, among them the Romantica Thermal Park too. A strong magnet for lovers of wellbeing.
Also the inside areas of Forio are well worth seeing: the never ending Strada Borbonica (Bourbon's Road), connecting the municipalities of Casamicciola Terme, Lacco Ameno and Forio up to the district of Monterone, offers images of great beauty: with the sea in the background, smelling citrus plantations, luxuriant woods, noble vine yards and, just in the middle of the island, the Mount Epomeo, whose top arises up to 789 m.
Which are the major places of interest in the Town of Serrara Fontana?
Here you are with the most multiform municipality of Ischia, where both mountain and sea live together: Serrara Fontana is everything and its contrary, as along with the Mount Epomeo creeps Sant'Angelo, the maritime.
The first with its air, life, climate and mountain peace, the second with the smell of the sea, the espanse of water, the thermal springs, the wild bays, the small, intimate beaches, the winding stone lanes, the typically Mediterranean white and pastel-coloured houses, the marina, the Park Hotel & Terme Romantica, wonderfully overlooking the whole fishermen village from the height of its hill.
Well worth experiencing is the “climbing” of the Mount, possible by car up to a certain spot and then on foot or on a mule, to reach the Pietra dell'Acqua (Water Rock) at 720 m or go on to the Eremo di San Nicola (Saint Nicola's Hermitage) or even to the real top. A demanding walk that will give real wellbeing together with the benefits of totally unpolluted air and the breathtaking view able to astonish even the natives!
On the other hand, St. Angelo can be discovered little by little. Begin from the coast, while enjoying the cobalt blue sea and the sandy beaches, getting involved with exciting divings that will unveil the most intimate and natural aspect of this land and going on through the thousands of lanes, typical spots and ancient, narrow stairways to the most panoramic places steadily caressed by sea breeze.
Which are the major places of interest in the Town of Barano d'Ischia?
Our virtual tour ends with the town that boasts the longest beach of Ischia: the Maronti, stretching along the southern coast of the island. Also the famous Fumarole belong to the Maronti: hot thermal vapours coming from the underground on the Maronti's beach line near St. Angelo, where wellbeing deriving from sun and sea joins the one coming from the hot sand baths, able to give great relief to rheumatic troubles. Furthermore, at the Fumarole it is the custom to put under the hot sand chicken and other kinds of meat, fish, vegetables, potatoes and eggs wrapped up in aluminium foils… All one has to do is wait for the irresistible smell that has nothing to do with the one, though tempting, produced by the usual baking.
This excellent vapour cooking by means of a "very natural oven" gives off really unknown smells, thus sticking in one's mind, especially after tasting these specialities.
The town-centre of Barano enjoys a location of special beauty, even more improved by its nice viewpoints overlooking impressive crags and green valleys, luxuriant pine and chestnut woods, century-old villages whose symbol is frequently a bell tower standing out in the sky and finally the Nitrodi Springs. Dedicated to the nymph having the same name and rich in history, as testified by several marble bas-reliefs: their waters, acknowledged as highly effective from a therapeutical point of view, develop their powerful action especially against skin diseases, besides being almost thaumaturgical in the processes of wound and burn cicatrisation. Just reachable on foot, they are surrounded by thick vegetation and are able to give skin also beauty benefits such as absolute smoothness, moisturization and nourishment.
