Romantica SPA
By steadily searching for psycho-physical wellbeing the human being has always been focusing on thermal water and mud too, thanks to their absolutely natural origin, which remarkably contributes to produce deep and manifold beneficial effects, acknowledged also by the international scientific community.
Today thermalism represents a timeless world whose iconography could belong to each historical age: from the Etruscan to the Roman one, from the Renaissance to the early 1900's.
Symbols are over time: relaxed and quiet atmosphere, delicate and pleasant sounds, crystal clear flowing of warm thermal water, mysterious vapours, bodies wrapped in white sheets hiding the hot mud while it performs its regenerating and reactivating action, soft, well-experienced hands able to relax body and mind at the utmost level, scented air…
Words to express the world of sensations arisen by thermalism are not easy to be found, probably because it is difficult to explain why these two powerful elements of nature, thermal water and mud, are gifted with a cocktail of mineral substances, an alchemy of solid, liquid and gas components, able to give birth to such a relaxing, regenerating, stress relieving and healing action.
Being in the physical state suitable to thermal treatments makes it possible to enjoy the great privilege of a natural therapy which does not only prevent and heal ailments and diseases – without the side effects and chemical interactions deriving by the allopathic cures – but also interacts globally with body and mind by developing a "positive chain" of antalgic, relaxing and detoxifying reactions.
Our springs
Our 4 springs of thermal water are of volcanic origin (the latest eruption of the Mount Epomeo was in 1301). The thermal water gushes out at a depth of about 70/80 m underground with a temperature of 90° C. Its classification derives from the origin of the substances it contains, which are originated by the meteoric cycle (rain water) through a piercing mechanism into the soil and the rocks as well as by the magma. Moreover, sea water infiltrations can also take place, thus feeding the springs too.
According to the chemical analysis carried out by the University of Naples Federico II in March 2008, the Romantica thermal water was classified as
"Hyperthermal chloride-sodium-sulphate water rich in mineral salts".
Mud and Thermal Baths
After more than 40 years of professional experience, the mud wrap at the Romantica Spa is truly an "institution" enhanced both by our steady search for quality and by the renowned properties of the thermal water gushing from our wells…
The following four elements are indispensable for classifying the quality of thermal mud:
Ability to keep its temperature;
Capacity to soak and absorb thermal water;
Good pliability level;
Viscosity
Depending on the use, either for an effective mud bath rich in therapeutic properties or a simple hot wrap, thermal mud must undergo a very slow maturation process for a minimum six months. At the Romantica Spa here at St. Angelo this maturation process takes place by dipping the mud in thermal water at a temperature of 40° C. The deep connection between the solid element (mud) and the fluid (thermal water), together with the progressive absorption of the thermo-minerals, different organic elements of the microbic flora inside the mud render it a powerful therapeutic resource.
After completion of the compulsory medical examination thermal mud can be applied partially or totally at a temperature from 38° to 40° C for around 15 minutes. But what do we mean when we speak about a full-body mud bath? In effect this treatment covers the whole back, hips, knees and feet but the main body trunk and genital organs are never treated. By contrast, a partial mud bath covers just hands or knees and does not require a thermal shower or bath afterwards.
After the full-body mud bath and the consequent reaction phase we highly recommend a full-body massage carried out by one of our qualified therapists as this completes the natural cycle of the thermal mud bath.
From the therapeutic point of view, the thermal mud bath therapy is recommended for all forms of chronic arthrosis as well as the arthro-rheuma conditions. We emphasize that it is never suitable for the acute forms of these conditions. Thanks to the clay component thermal mud baths improve the absorption of previously applied substances, which is why a series of electrotherapy treatments integrated with a cycle of thermal mud baths is much more effective than a single treatment in a medical centre. Furthermore, science has proven that thermal mud baths contribute to human body trace elements, mineral salts and in some cases also vitamins, indispensable for cutaneous biological processes. At the same time they develop an important protective and regenerating action by relieving joint illnesses, improving blood flow in tissues and stimulating the immune system.

Thermal Inhalation and Aerosol
Our Spa offers warm-damp inhalation with both direct single jet and aerosol. Water flow hits several spiral filters that break-up the larger water particles and thus reduce its temperature. As a result, the external cannula or dispenser gives off a thick mist of water particles at an ideal temperature between 37° and 38° C. The bigger particles carry out an intense cleansing action and a delicate massage of the respiratory tract and settle on the rhinopharynx and larynx mucous membranes.
A remarkable benefit, frequently appearing just after the first treatment sessions, is relief in the respiratory tract from the damage caused by pollution, smoking, microbes and many other harmful agents. In addition, the smaller particles of water penetrate the most hidden areas of the bronchial tree (upper-medium-lower) to cleanse the mucous membranes and loosen the secreted fluids by stimulating expectoration. The correct distance from the nozzle is around 20/25 cm. and during the inhalation carried-out with open mouth at the level of the jet, one has to breathe deeply but without hyperventilating for around 12 minutes.
The therapeutical indications for inhalation treatments are: chronic nose and throat illnesses, sinusitis, simple bronchitis, and chronic obstructive bronchitis. The Thermal Aerosol consists of very small (nebulized) particles of thermal water able to reach the deepest branches of the respiratory tract such as the distal walls. Our devices use compressed air to get particles of different diameter able to enter both the upper and the lower respiratory tract. The average quantity of inhaled thermal water during a session is about one litre. The aerosol is inhaled at the same temperature the water has at the spring whereas the inhalation undergoes a process of thermal adaptation. On the basis of the area to be treated (pharynx, nasal fossae, sinusitis…), the medical prescription and the assessment of our health director, the client uses a plastic mouthpiece, a nasal fork or a mask. Each therapy session lasts around 12 minutes.
